Intermediate Handbuilding | Sundays 10am (April)

$225.00

Sundays 10AM - 12PM
April 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th

Studio COSA
900 N. Virgil Ave. Los Angeles CA 90029

This four-week intermediate course is designed for students who already understand the basics of hand building and are ready to refine their work.

Think of this as four themed workshops woven into one cohesive experience.

Each week focuses on a category of objects, encouraging you to build with intention and create pieces that feel part of a collection. We’ll dive deeper into proportion, scale, wall thicknesses, weight distribution, surface detail, and refinement.

This course is less about “can I make this?” and more about “how do I make this beautifully?”

By the end of the session, you’ll have a small cohesive body of work that feels thoughtful, elevated, and distinctly your own.

April Theme: Sculptural Forms for Spring

Week 1: Romantic Vessels
Bud vases, elongated vessels, and sculptural tabletop forms. Focus on height, balance, collar refinement, and even wall thickness for taller pieces.

Week 2: Jewelry Trays + Catchalls
Organic trays, ring dishes, and vanity catchalls. Explore soft slab construction, elevated rims, intentional warping, and refined edges.

Week 3: Sculptural Florals
Dimensional flowers, floral wall tiles, and embellished vessels. Learn petal shaping, layering for depth, structural attachment, and preventing cracks in delicate forms.

Week 4: Surface + Glaze Refinement
Layered underglaze, soft tonal palettes, highlighting texture, and intentional glaze placement to enhance sculptural details.

This course is best suited for students who have completed a beginner session or have prior hand building experience.

Includes:
– 4 themed studio sessions (2 hours each)
– Open studio / practice hours Monday – Saturday 10AM – 4PM
– 12 lbs of standard B-mix clay (additional clay available for purchase)
– Use of studio tools & equipment
– Bisque firing + glaze firing (3–4 week turnaround)
